Discover Australia by Self-Drive Rental Car, 4WD or Campervan

Australia is a vast continent full of amazing sights. There is a vast network of well-maintained roads and highways with some of the most beautiful road touring in the world. If you enjoy traveling at a leisurely pace, our 7-day itineraries linking the major cities will tempt you. However, if you're here on a shorter trip, you may prefer to combine a couple of short 4-day regional stays with an internal flight. The following itineraries are our suggestions to ensure you see as much of this vast land as possible. Choose a rental car with a Choice Hotel Accommodation pass or travel and stay in a motorhome or 4WD campervan - the choice is yours!

Keep to the left at all times.
Obey all traffic signs and signals and indicate your intention to turn or change lanes.

All drivers and passengers must wear seat belts at all times. Be sure to carry your drivers license when driving.

It is recommended that you do your driving in the morning when you are fresh and alert, and leave walking, sightseeing and other activities to the afternoon.

All vehicle hires include:
  • Detailed leaflet on Safe Driving in Australia
  • 4WD and Isolated Areas leaflet.
Speed Limits
Speed limits are fixed by law and tell you the maximum speed you are allowed to drive - not how fast you have to drive. Please note the maximum speed limit in suburban areas is 50km/h (30mph). Please adjust your driving and speed to the changing conditions of the road and weather.

1 kilometer = 0.62 miles
1 mile = 1.61 kilometers

Night Driving
Between sunset and sunrise you must drive with your headlights and rear lights on. During days with conditions of poor visibility, i.e. fog, you must also drive with your lights on. In suburban areas you must use low beam.

Wildlife
When traveling outside major cities beware of animal activity, particularly at dawn and dusk, and slow down.

Alcohol
Avoid drinking alcohol before driving. The legal blood alcohol concentration limit is 0.05, however the safest level is zero.

Aboriginal Land
A permit is required when traveling on roads over Aboriginal land. Please enquire with your travel consultant for information on these locations.
